Shield Tank Spreadsheet v. on Google Docs

February 1, 2012 Leave a comment

Hello my lovelies,

After nearly a month without a computer I’m back in business, with a shiny ‘new’ desktop. Raiding is now prettier, but significantly less comfortable.

At the request of some guildies who don’t have Excel, I have uploaded the DR spreadsheet to Google Docs, and done the necessary adjustments to make it functional and user-friendly in that environment. None of the math has changed since I uploaded the Excel version of, so you should use whichever format you prefer.

Any future updates to the spreadsheet will be done in parallel on Google Docs and the Excel version.

Shield Tank Spreadsheet v.

If you’re reading this in the future, this spreadsheet may be broken or out of date. Please see the Spreadsheets category for the most recent version.

Here’s the most recent spreadsheet: damagereduction_4.3.0.

Changes from version

  • Raised the cap on Shield Block and Holy Shield uptime to 100%, to allow modeling of the Ultraxion encounter
  • Changed CTC calculation to include Shield Block if its uptime is at 100%
  • Fixed a few formulas broken by the above changes.

I was also unable to replicate on my home computer a bug in the last version’s Yes/No dropdowns. Hopefully this means it resolved itself. If you experience this bug in the new version (you’ll know it when you see it) please drop me a line, either in the comments below or at uncrittable AT gmail DOT com.

Shield Tank Spreadsheet v.

If I’d been a little more timely in updating this space, this would have been version, but whatever – it’s not like warriors or paladins received any survivability changes in this patch or in the recent hotfixes.

Shield tank damage reduction spreadsheet – updated for 4.2

June 25, 2011 Leave a comment

Well, I never did publish this in 4.0. And by 4.1, I figured it was pretty much unnecessary.

But 4.2 is coming up, and there have been some major changes in stat weights for plate tanks!

  • Agility is now worthless as a mitigation stat for plate tanks.
  • Parry from strength has been slightly increased.
  • Holy Shield has been redesigned away from 100% uptime, making the value of mastery to paladins more dependent on playstyle.

I feel like this is as good an excuse as any to release the damage reduction spreadsheet I keep alluding to. So here it is, in its full, updated-for-4.2 “glory:”

If you’re reading this in the future, the above link may be broken or out of date. Please see the Spreadsheets category for the most recent version.

The spreadsheet is appropriate for both paladins and warriors.

The main difference between my spreadsheet and the other gearing tools/spreadsheets I’ve seen for shield tanks is that it takes into account Shield Block (and now Holy Shield) uptime in its calculations, which slightly boosts the value of mastery, parry and strength for warriors* (and now mastery for paladins) the higher its uptime is.

Feel free to play around with the spreadsheet, and please point out any errors you notice.

The New Effective Health Formula

October 28, 2010 1 comment

As we discussed before the patch, there have been some changes to armor on items. Bonus armor’s item point cost has been drastically increased on all items except for trinkets, shield armor has been reduced, agility no longer grants armor, and the Engineering tanking benefit, Reticulated Armor Webbing, has been nerfed from 885 armor to 250 armor. Between the reduction in our personal armor, the removal of some armor raid buffs, and the relative nerf to the -AP debuff, we would expect to be taking a bit more damage on physical hits.

We would not expect to be taking this much more damage.

Happily, a Death Knight tank named Valen, of Temerity – Windrunner – Alliance, figured out what was wrong and posted it on the official tanking forums. I highly recommend you read the original post if you like theorycrafting, are interested in the details, or just like the visual of Algalon dual-wielding Lich Kings.

Incite and Crit

October 13, 2010 2 comments

While waiting for my final (hopefully) download to complete on my ridiculously slow connection, I finally simmed out Incite like I’ve been meaning to. Please note that this particular sim is only applicable to Prot and Fury, because simming Deep Wounds requires taking into account possible overwrites from other abilities and that’s really more hassle than I want to go to at the moment.

The Attack Speed Debuff

September 12, 2010 3 comments

Author’s Note: This is the first third or so of a much longer post, which I originally released as one gargantuan wall of text. I’ve decided to split it into its three conceptual parts, and will be releasing them every few days to avoid overwhelming anyone who cares.

With hunter pet abilities newly released in the most recent Cataclysm beta build, I think it’s a good time to discuss tanking debuffs.

Obviously, tanks benefit from many of the debuffs placed on mobs, including sunder armor, faerie fire, trauma, etc. But only two types of debuffs a) reduce a tank’s damage taken, and b) are commonly applicable to boss mobs. These are the attack speed debuff and the AP reduction debuff. Read more…
