The Light is Full of Assholes – Velen, the Draenei and K’ure

September 28, 2010 2 comments

I don’t care that your Light-worshipping character/pet NPC is a perfectly upstanding citizen with enough moral fiber to relieve a constipated angel. “The Light is Full of Assholes” does not mean “All Light Followers are Assholes;” it means “Many Light Followers are Assholes.” Given that the same could be said of any reasonably-sized group of people, this shouldn’t even need to be stated; but since sometime during the late Burning Crusade Blizzard has become so enamored of their Christianity expy that they appear incapable of acknowledging that anyone involved might be a colossal asshole.

Anyway, let’s talk about Velen, Prophet of the Naaru and leader of the draenei on Azeroth. He is held up by the community and by Blizzard as Spiritual Authority and All Around Good Guy.

When the Sunwell needed to be purified at the end of TBC, they brought him into Silvermoon to do the honors. He has had centuries of friendly contact with the physical manifestations of the Light, the Naaru. And he is a coward and a bigot, unfit to lead the Draenei people. Read more…

Tanking Add-Ons

September 26, 2010 Leave a comment

Blizzard’s UI is lacking in some key elements for every role in the game, and tanking is no exception. For the most part you can make do without addons, but for a few vital bits of functionality, here’s what I recommend every tank have: Read more…

Pet Raid Benefits in Cataclysm

Author’s Note: This is the last sixth or so of a much longer post, which I originally released as one gargantuan wall of text. You may want to start with part 1.

Pet Raid Benefits in Cataclysm

If you’re curious about the full scope of pet raid benefits in Cata, you can find all of the as-yet data mined ones at mmo-champion.com. I’m only going to be talking about the tanking debuffs. Read more…

The Attack Power Debuff

Author’s Note: This is the middle half or so of a much longer post, which I originally released as one gargantuan wall of text. You may want to start with part 1.

The Attack Power Debuff

The attack power debuff reduces an enemy’s attack power by a static amount. The exact benefit of this debuff is hard to ascertain – damage from AP is calculated very differently for NPCs. Players’ autoattacks scale at a rate of 1 DPS per 14 AP, but testing – and investigation of Beast type enemies through the hunter ability Beast Lore – has shown that enemies have significantly less AP than a player, and that their autoattacks and especially their special abilities scale steeply with the stat. Things I Will Judge You For If You Use

Parts 2 and 3 of the tanking debuffs article are still on their way; in the meantime, have some judgment!

Late last night, after my night class and my weekly helping of fail VoA, I needed a daily on my warrior, but was too sleepy to tank. No, no, this isn’t a fail tank story – quite the opposite. Myself and two friends queued up and were placed with a low-geared but skilled tank, and after some pleasantries and compliments all round the tank asked the enchanter in the group if he had Blade Ward, because he wanted to see the mats. And because we were friendly, and I was sleepy enough not to care, I felt comfortable to interject that Blade Ward is bad. We had a nice little conversation: Blanket tried to whore out my blog, I whored out Veneratio’s blog instead (since, um, actually, I haven’t written anything about enchantments), and we discussed the merits of Mongoose, Blade Ward and Blood Draining.

After this pleasant incident it occurred to me that while, yes, BiS enchantments and gear and talents have been done to death, you rarely read about what’s terrible. Most tanks don’t have access to BiS gear, and with Gear Score’s prominence it can be tempting to “upgrade” your GS with high item level garbage over low item level but well-itemized items and enchantments. This is terrible. It impresses idiots and repulses the knowledgeable. Read more…

The Attack Speed Debuff

September 12, 2010 3 comments

Author’s Note: This is the first third or so of a much longer post, which I originally released as one gargantuan wall of text. I’ve decided to split it into its three conceptual parts, and will be releasing them every few days to avoid overwhelming anyone who cares.

With hunter pet abilities newly released in the most recent Cataclysm beta build, I think it’s a good time to discuss tanking debuffs.

Obviously, tanks benefit from many of the debuffs placed on mobs, including sunder armor, faerie fire, trauma, etc. But only two types of debuffs a) reduce a tank’s damage taken, and b) are commonly applicable to boss mobs. These are the attack speed debuff and the AP reduction debuff. Read more…

A /facepalm pug moment

September 9, 2010 1 comment

A few lines have been edited from this transcript for readability – boss emotes, loot rolls, etc. Nothing that any player said has been left out or altered in any way. This is the first time I spoke in /p during the instance – there was no bad blood between us whatsoever. Names have been changed to protect both the innocent and the guilty. Read more…
